About RE-SAT

RE-SAT is a powerful renewable energy analytics platform to support government, utilities, investors and other stakeholders in Small Island Developing States.

  • Improve renewable energy planning through high resolution power estimates.
  • Increase investor confidence in renewable energy through accurate energy generation projections.
  • Optimise the location of renewable energy infrastructure for production, whilst maintaining awareness of constraints such as protected areas and existing infrastructure, visualised as GIS layers.
  • Save money on redundant infrastructure by sizing schemes more accurately.
  • Increase productivity through collaborative working using the online data repository to share relevant energy data and documentation with key stakeholders, such as policy makers, energy planners, utility companies and regulators.
  • Optimise location of lengthy and costly field surveys needed to secure investment for renewable energy.
  • Reduce risk of financial exposure to multi-year variability in power production (e.g. El Niño Southern Oscillation)

RE-SAT funders and partners

Funded by the UK Space Agency IPP programme in 2017, RE-SAT has been developed as an initial proof of concept platform in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of the Seychelles. Having successfully secured follow-on funding from the UK Space Agency, RE-SAT will be rolled-out to an additional 6 partner countries across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific regions during 2018-2021.

The Institute for Environmental Analytics is a world-leading applied R&D centre focussed on tackling environmental challenges using big data analytics. We leverage our deep expertise in data science to produce software applications that help end users understand complex environmental data within the energy, agri-food and infrastructure sectors.

The UK Space Agency is responsible for all strategic decisions on the UK civil space programme and provide a clear, single voice for UK space ambitions. UK Space Agency is an executive agency, sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

On the ground in about 170 countries and territories, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) works to eradicate poverty while protecting the planet. UNDP helps countries develop strong policies, skills, partnerships and institutions so they can sustain their progress.

£2.9m investment in IEA to share renewable energy expertise & space technology with 6 island states

UK-based Institute for Environmental Analytics is to roll out its innovative renewable energy analytics platform, RE-SAT, to six island states in the Caribbean, Pacific and Indian oceans.

The extension of the successful pilot of RE-SAT in the Seychelles has been made possible by £2.9m investment from the UK Space Agency International Partnership Programme (IPP).

The small island developing states (SIDS) to benefit are at the forefront of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy. They are:
